Rancid Organic Skin Care

There is something quite interesting that was called to my attention recently. I was shopping around and came across one cosmetic brand that offers for sale Organic baby skin care products. What I've found strange is that the products smelled somewhat strange. It was very reputable brand and my competitor and it rated very well on Skin Deep when it comes to toxicity of the ingredients used. This brand claims to not use preservatives, which according to them makes their products better then the ones that do contain preservatives. I was confused and contacted my chemist/formulator of the Lab I am working with to clarify whether this claim is really true by the sound of it. She explained to me that all products need a small amount of preservatives in order to preserve freshness and potency of the product. And Organic products need it even more. We all know that non Organic fruits and vegetables in the store have waxy coating therefore it keeps them fresh looking for very long time. And pure untreated Organic fruits have to be consumed much quicker or they go bad. Same thing applies to Organic ingredients, especially oils. They go bad much faster without preservative. She also told me that 100% of Certified Organic products currently on market are rancid and rancid oils are far more dangerous to the skin then any preservative. We, at Sweetsation Therapy, are using flower extract food grade preservative Phenoxyethanol in our products at half %.
Most of the products sit on the shelves of stores longer then 3 weeks which is life expectancy of non preserved natural skin care, so before you buy anything just because it's Organic and Natural, smell it. Better safe then sorry.

Bioderma withdraws anti-stretchmark cream on allergy fears

Snipetts taken from Cosmetics design Europe.
By Simon Pitman, 03-Apr-2009

French premium cosmetics player Laboratoire Bioderma has withdrawn its ABC Maman Vergetures cream from stores in France after reports that it led to allergies.
The move came after the government backed health and sanitation safety agency, Afssaps, was alerted to the fact that a number of pregnant women had reported allergic reactions resulting in contact dermatitis after using the product.
The agency said that as a precaution it had reached an agreement with Laboratoire Derma to withdraw all stocks of the products from distribution in France and recommends anyone currently in possession of the product to stop use and return it to the point of sale.
All products dated on or before September 2011

As a result all batches of the product with an expiration date on or before September 2011 will have to be withdrawn due to the resulting health concerns.
The agency decided to take affirmative action to withdraw the product after it received 5 complaints from pregnant women, who all cited contact dermatitis that had taken the form of a red rash on the skin where the cream was applied.
Although this contact allergy has not been linked to any serious side affects besides the rash, the agency said that it was taking the measure to withdraws stocks of the product from the market as a safety precaution.

The cream was launched by the company back in January 2008, since when 8,339 tubes have been distributed in pharmacies and other retail outlets throughout France.
The company says that sales of the product overseas have only been very small and that there is no formal international distribution of the product.
France sets stanard for use of cosmetics while pregnant . In November last year the French government said that it was looking into a growing body of evidence to suggest that certain cosmetic ingredient should be avoided by pregnant women.

Reacting to this the French health authorities say they are considering plans to introduce a specific logo that would draw attention to cosmetic products posing a potential risk if used by women during pregnancy.
The move targets specific chemicals in the paraben and phthalates families that some suggest may increase the risk of deformities in unborn babies, as well as cancers.
Response from Sweetsation Therapy: Well, we are glad that we are not in France and don't have to deal with these issues. But you would think being a Cosmetic Lab they would do their due delegence and research the ingredients and make sure they don't include harmful ingredients in the formula...... It's very well known fact that artificial fragrances contain phthalates that are immune system disrupters and parabens are skin toxicant and unsafe in cosmetics. Very sad that they "didn't know that" or did they? Playing with health and future of our babies has to be punishable by law, that's what we think.
Sweetsation Therapy products do not have and will never have any phthalates, parabens, artificial colors or fragrances, formaldexyde, dioxane, Retinols, Sulfates or known allergenes.
So, research your stuff , read the label, before you buy.
