Ugly Truths Behind the Myth of Cosmetics Safety

Every day we use multiple personal care products—from shampoo to deodorant, lotion to make-up—that contain chemical ingredients that are absorbed through the skin, inhaled or ingested. So it’s not surprising that potentially harmful chemicals have gotten into our bodies, our breast milk and our children. Some of these chemicals are linked to cancer, birth defects, learning disabilities and other health problems that are epidemic in our society. Astonishingly, in the United States, 1 in 2 men and 1 in 3 women are expected to develop cancer during their lifetimes, according to the National Cancer Institute. The cosmetics industry says that it's safe to put toxic chemicals linked to cancer, infertility or other health problems into personal care products because the amount in each product is too small to matter. But none of us use just one product. Think about how many products you use in a single day— from toothpaste to soap, shampoo, hair conditioner, deodorant, body lotion, shaving products and makeup—and how many products you use in a year, and over a lifetime. Small amounts of toxic chemicals add up and can accumulate in our bodies. Chemicals linked to cancer and birth defects do not belong in personal care products, period.

Major loopholes in federal law prevent the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) or any
other government agency from approving the safety of cosmetics and body care products before they can be sold. The European Union now bans more than 1,100 chemicals from personal care products because they may cause cancer, birth defects or reproductive problems. In stark contrast, just 10 ingredients are banned from cosmetics in the United States.
Manufacturers say their products are safe. But what do those claims really mean? It may mean that the company has tested the ingredients it uses—but only to determine if the chemicals cause rashes, swelling or other acute reactions. Companies are not required to test the ingredients in their products to determine if they cause longterm, negative health effects,
such as cancer or the inability to have a healthy child. Since there is no government standard
for safety, companies can say whatever they want about the safety of their products.

Few ingredients have been assessed for long-term health impacts, but those that have—and are known or suspected to be toxic—are still allowed in cosmetics. Seven of the most problematic are:
MERCURY
Often listed as thimerosal on ingredient labels, mercury is a possible human carcinogen, and a human reproductive or developmental toxin. Found in some eye drops, ointments and mascaras.
PLACENTA
Placenta produces progesterone, estrogen and other hormones that can interfere with the body’s normal hormone functions and can lead to serious health problems—like breast cancer—when used in cosmetics. Sometimes used in hair relaxers, moisturizers and toners.
LEAD ACETATE
This compound of lead is a known human reproductive and developmental toxin. Prohibited from use in cosmetics in the European Union. Found in some hair dyes and cleansers.
PETROCHEMICALS
These byproducts of crude oil (appearing on labels as petrolatum, mineral oil and paraffin) may contain known or suspected human carcinogens as well as harmful breakdown products or impurities from manufacturing processes (such as 1,4-Dioxane), which are not listed on
ingredient labels. Found in some hair relaxers, shampoos, anti-aging creams, mascaras, erfumes, foundations, lipsticks and lip balms.
PHTHALATES
These plasticizing chemicals are probable human reproductive or developmental toxins and endocrine disruptors. Two phthalates often used in cosmetics (dibutyl and diethylhexyl) have been banned in the European Union. Found in some nail polishes, fragrances and hair sprays.
HYDROQUINONE
A possible carcinogen and probable neurotoxin and skin sensitizer, hydroquinone can also cause a skin disease called ochronosis, which leaves irreversible black-blue lesions on skin. Found in some skin lightening products and moisturizers.

Extremely tiny particles which are largely untested and unlabeled in personal care products,
capable of being absorbed directly into the bloodstream. Found in some eye shadows, bronzers, sunscreens and lotions.

For example - Neutrogena After Sun Treatment with Natural Soy has one of the highest hazard ratings. What's so "natural" about a product with more than 10 different ingredients that raise
health concerns? Neutrogena is owned by Johnson & Johnson, which markets its products as superior because of their "natural" properties and recommendations from health-care providers.

Do we still want to neglect reading the label??

Cosmetics, Beauty and Brain Science

Japanese Cosmetics mega brand Kanebo conducted a research on what goes through a women’s mind when she applies make-up.

Using brain scanning equipment, the scientists were surprised to discover that women experience a wave of euphoria and optimism as they prepare for their make-up routine, confounding the commonly held belief that positive feelings would be experienced after the make-up is applied.
The research, which was carried out by a team of scientists headed by Dr. Ken Mogi at Kanebo’s research and development laboratories in Tokyo, aimed to determine the distinct cognitive activities involved in how a woman perceives herself with and without make-up. The work is important to manufacturers and marketers of color cosmetic products, because it helps explain the exact reasons why women wear make-up and how it makes them feel better about themselves.

The scientists believe that the positive feelings are bought on by the thought of how the appearance might be improved by the make-up application process, transforming the individuals' self image and perception for the better, albeit temporarily.
The team of scientists believe that these type of feelings are experienced during many different beauty routines, including men’s grooming tasks such as shaving and applying cologne.
Ultimately the scientisits believe the data that they have uncovered holds the key to developing cosmetics and personal care products with enhanced emotional values to add appeal for consumers.

Moisturisers linked to Cancer. Baby creams among them.

I've stumbelled into this article and thought that it contains an important information that mothers would want to know. I can't testify whether it is true or not, but as we say - betther safe then sorry. Vanicream was recommended to my son by our pediatrician for skin irritations, at some point. Thankfully it didn't do much so I didn't use it a lot on him. Source of the article is CosmeticsDesign web site.

"A study that suggested common moisturisers may increase the rate of tumour formation in mice with a high skin cancer risk has provoked a storm within the industry.
The research, originally published online and covered by CosmeticsDesign in August, appears in this month’s Journal of Investigative Dermatology along with some fierce criticisms from the manufacturers of the creams.
Original study Run by scientists at Rutgers State University of New Jersey, the study concluded that applying a number of commercially available moisturising creams (Dermabase, Dermovan, Eucerin or Vanicream) to the skin of mice pre-treated with UVB (to make them high risk for skin cancer) increased the rate of tumour formation. Care for your skin...poisonously. Love, CHANEL

This is going to be a rant of a pregnant woman, so if you absolutely and utterly in love with CHANEL, please don't read this.

As an owner of Sweetsation Therapy we do care about the health of humans. We strive to promote healthy skin caring and choose to use only organic and natural ingredients. I do my extensive researches every day. So it's needless to say that I was aware that Department Store cosmetic brands are... well, how it is nicer to say.., not very healthy from living green standpoint, but what I discovered today was a bit heavier then I thought. And I am talking about somebody's (not mine) beloved brand CHANEL. Not only it is not natural - it is a complete poison. The product I've picked to rant about is the most poisonous of all- CHANEL Radiance Energizing Lotion. It scores 9 out of 10 on Toxicity table, but hey, it smells nice and it's pink....aaaaah . There is absolutely nothing natural about it. Just a bunch of smelling good chemicals that consultant at the counter, with a smile, tells you that it will do miracles to your skin. It has all the "kaka" that companies like mine wouldn't touch even with a stick, and we are talking about: phthalates, fragrance, parabens and sulfates, ..everything that's been linked to cancer, cellular changes, allergies, reproductive toxocity, all in the same bottle.

Have fun researching about your favorite brands by clicking this link.

So why do we pay such an ungodly amount of money for this??? To the company that is big and rich enough to improve it's skin care, but it wouldn't. Why? Because it's more expensive to use natural ingredients. Why to bother? People will buy the "label" anyway. But what we are paying for is for their advertisement that's cost millions, to stay in front of our faces forever. Forever buy their poisonous concoctions in the bottle. Not sure how about you, but it makes me sick.

I think it's about time to start paying attention on the ingredient label of the Cosmetic Giants and stop paying for their advertisement by buying toxic cosmetics - because it this case you are paying twice (with your health).

Stop the FDA Globalization Act of 2008!!

Watch this video here and then read the Petition below. Sign the Petition opposing the FDA Globalization Act of 2008 by leaving your name and comment in the comments section below! The petition is for everyone: consumers and the small businesses who make the products they love!

This video summarizes the Indie Beauty Network's position against the Discussion Draft of the FDA Globalization Act of 2008, the legislation that would put thousands of Indies out of business by forcing them to pay outrageous registration fees and comply with burdensome paperwork.
If passed, this law would drive consumers back to the days when they could only choose between a few huge, faceless, nameless big box stores and brands for their cosmetics and personal care products. And fewer consumer choices always leads to higher prices.
Tell Congress you want none of it by reading this Petition and then leaving your comment below as your signature to the Petition opposing the draft law. Please include your name, city and state with your comment.
Petition
We are the owners of small cosmetics companies, and the customers who love their products.
We understand that laws must be in place to protect everyone from unsafe products, but we are outraged by the Draft Legislation that would require small cosmetics companies to pay thousands of dollars a year in registration fees and comply with burdensome paperwork that would serve only to put them out of business.
If passed the legislation would deny thousands of families the ability to earn an honest living, and also deprive consumers of the variety of cosmetics and personal care products available to choose from.
We oppose this law and condemn any companies that support it as being interested only in creating an unlevel playing field where small and family owned businesses will be forced from the marketplace before they even get a chance to start out.
We urge you, as our representatives in Congress, to stop this law which would serve only to make it even harder for families to support themselves. We call instead for a real and meaningful discussion about how Congressional goals can be accomplished without enacting unfair laws that make it impossible for small businesses to survive.
In signing this Petition, we formally request that the Discussion Draft of the FDA Globalization Act of 2008 be marked up so that the legitimate concerns of small businesses and the consumers they serve can be translated into reasonable laws that protect consumers without also killing small businesses by making them pay unfair fees and comply with burdensome paperwork.
We sincerely thank you for your time.
Please feel free to post the video at your blog, myspace page, website and anywhere else it can help spread the word against this anti-small and anti-family business legislation.
Click here for the YouTube link. Then copy the Embed link to the right of the video into your website, blog, etc.
Please send your customers and colleagues to this blog post to sign this Petition so we can easily keep count of the number of signatories.
After you sign the Petition by leaving your name and comments in the comments section below, you could even cut and paste the Petition text and send it to Virgil Miller at [deleted]. Mr. Miller is a Professional Staff Member with the House Energy & Commerce Committee.
Our goal is to collect 100,000 signatories to present to Congress. Support small businesses! Support a vibrant marketplace! Make Your voice count!

Natural and Organic Cosmetics tipped to resist downturn

By Guy Montague-Jones, 09-Jan-2009. Source Cosmetics Design.

Industry insiders predict that natural and organic cosmetics will hold up well in 2009 even if they do not enjoy the dramatic sales growth of previous years.
Even in a recession people have to wash and still want to look good so cosmetics and personal care are often thought to be better insulated than other industries in a downturn.
But as disposable income drops in 2009, commentators have suggested that consumers will switch to cheaper beauty products.
Falling into a higher price bracket, organic and natural cosmetics should therefore struggle to compete in the new economic environment.
Organic resistance to recession
Not so, according to Tina Gill from Organic Monitor. The research and consultancy company expects the organic and natural sector to continue to perform well in the year ahead.
Consumers are unlikely to give up their commitment to organic products just to save a few pennies.
Gill said organic cosmetics are not even necessarily more expensive than traditional products and often a lot cheaper than those in the premium category.
Nevertheless, Gill said the natural and organic market would be affected by the economic situation. She said consumers are likely to go for more mid-range and private label organics instead of luxury options.
Variations between countries
The worldwide economic slowdown will make it harder to attract new customers. Gill does not anticipate a continuation of the dramatic growth rates of recent years but insisted that growth opportunities remain, especially in the Asian countries.
The spokesperson for international marketing at the leading natural cosmetics firm Weleda agreed, suggesting that growth would come from the LOHAS countries.
He said countries that have been hard hit by the financial crisis such as Spain will present a real challenge but that important markets such as Germany and Austria are looking strong. The picture varies between countries, but the spokesperson said that even in badly affected countries he does not expect many consumers to drop their commitment to natural and organic cosmetics.

Is StriVectin-SD great as it is advertised?? Read below!

Researching FDA (Food and Drug Administration) website today I've stumbeled across some very interesting information about StriVectin-SD. It's been on the market for a while now claming to do pretty much everything on the "miracle" list. Now it turns out that the product violated a lot of FDA rules and regulations and perhaps may not be as safe as it claims, after all. Read below the letter from Department of Health and Human Services to the manufacturing company in it's entirety.

This letter is in reference to your firm’s marketing and distribution of StriVectin-SD, StriVectin-SD Eye Cream, Dermalin-APg, Mamralin-ARa, and TestroGel. Stretch Marks. Will I get them...will I not...???

There are a lot of controversy going on about stretch marks and where they are coming from and why. Truth is, that we don't like them, we don't want to get them and we would do anything to prevent them. There are a ton of creams and oils on the market promising us to prevent them or to get rid of existing ones. There are a lot of creams and remedies for stretch marks and all of them, I am sure, work to various degree. However please don't forget that getting stretch marks or not doesn't depend only on heredetary. This"science" is not cut in stone. It also depends on your age, conditionof your skin, your diet, hydration and even the place where you live and climate. As you get older you are more likely to get them since elasticity and hydration of your skin deminishes. This is why it is imperative to religiously apply rich lotions, butters, oils and creams on your belly, tights and breasts. Yes, everywhere!!! A lot of women complain that they don't work. I am sure some work better and some less, but the main issue is that most of the women just don't apply enough (3-4 times per day, as usualy says on the label). And not often enough. If you're experiencing an itch - it'a already too late(your skin is depleated). If your skin had enough mosture and oils on it - it would not itch in the first place. Don't forget about the diet too, a lot of nutrients come from within. So if you don't put it in there, it will not be coming. Fish is particularly rich with Omega fatty acids, especially salmon, that are super important for not only your skin but development of your baby too. And last, but not least.... stretchmarks are NOT heredetary! Don't forget that there is also a father involved into making you. So you can't rely on the idea that if your mother has them, you will have them too. Poor excuse for lazy... After all you may have inherited your father's genes. I am, myself, a good example of that. A bit of prevention goes a long way. Lastly, I am the owner of Sweetsation Therapy company thatspecializes in Organic and Natural Pregnancy and Baby skin care products as well as Inovative Clip'n'Sleep Baby Carriers (slings). Our Stretch mark previntion products Ellasti*Belly Miracle Caviar and Oil have more then enough prevention, containing 30+ elasticity boosting essential oils and marine extracts. There is no product on the market that would combine in itself that many ingredients in one jar. And it is an ORGANIC. I am not going to make just empty promises about how wonderful they are, everyone can try them for themselves. We offer Trial Sizes and Samples as well as a lot of giveways and Promotions.

Happy pregnancies to all!!!

Mommies are a real power

Mommies never stop surprising me. I've been researching a lot of blogs lately and what can I say. My computer kept freezing off because I had so many of them minimized and kept on the same page. I just loved them all. It's amazing how much talant and creativity mothers have. Mothers of all ages, nationalities and origins. There are so many amazing giveaways I've run into, and when do they have time to do all this. Being a new mom it puzzeles me.
But hey, again, I forgot....I've developed my own company being a mom. It brings me to a conclusion - we are a massive power, very strong, supporting, talented and unstoppable, creative, pleasing and caring, loving and beautiful. Keep up being wonderful!
